Kenya Breweries yesterday donated Sh 2million towards the Kenya Open Golf Championship starting on Thursday at the Muthaiga Golf Club. While receiving the donation, Kenya Open Golf Ltd Director Kathleen Kihanya thanked Tusker Malt Lager for coming on board to support the event.

She said Kenya Open had joined the Challenge Tour schedule 22 years ago and has since produced numerous noteworthy winners.

She said the event will bring together around 156 international players to the world-class tournament that will be a showcase of international golfing standards. Thirty eight players will be drawn from Africa under the sponsor’s invitation.

Among the countries to be represented are—Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda and South Africa. Within this number, Kenya will have 20 Professional golfers as well as six selected amateurs who will battle it out with some of the best players from the continent and beyond.

Tusker Brand Manager Wanyi Mwaura said: “On behalf of Kenya Breweries Limited and the Tusker Malt Lager, it’s my pleasure to announce our engagement with the 2012 Kenya Open. This year, we will be associated with this prestigious event as the official beer partner, providing refreshments to thousands of golf fans who will be attending the event over the next five days.”

“For those competing in this year’s event, we wish them the very best,” she said.

Last year’s winner Michael Bothma is expected to defend his title after pocketing a winner’s cheque for €30,400 (Sh 4million), which moved him to the top of the challenge tour rankings and gave him every chance of claiming a European Tour card for the first time.  This year’s prize money for the championship is €190,000 (Sh21m), raised from many local corporate sponsors. michael kors tasche blau michael kors tasche blau
